Ozone decomposition on Saharan dust: an experimental investigation
نویسنده
چکیده
The heterogeneous reaction between O3 and authentic Saharan dust surfaces was investigated in a Knudsen reactor at≈ 296 K. O3 was destroyed on the dust surface and O2 was formed with conversion efficiencies of 1.0 and 1.3 molecules O2 per O3 molecule destroyed for unheated and heated samples, respectively. No O3 desorbed from exposed dust samples, showing that the uptake was irreversible. The uptake coefficients for the irreversible destruction of O3 on (unheated) Saharan dust surfaces depended on the O3 concentration and varied between 3.5 × 10−4 and 5.5 × 10−6 for the initial uptake coefficient (γ0 ≈ 3 × 10−5 at 30 ppbv O3 STP) and between 4.8 × 10−5 and 2.2 × 10−6 for the steady-state uptake coefficient (γss ≈ 7 × 10−6 at 30 ppbv O3 STP). At very high O3 concentrations the surface was deactivated, and O3 uptake ceased after a certain exposure period. Sample re-activation (i.e. de-passivation) was found to occur over periods of hours, after exposure to O3 had ceased, suggesting that re-activation processes play a role both in the laboratory and in the atmosphere.

متن کاملObservations and model calculations of trace gas scavenging in a dense Saharan dust plume during MINATROC
An intensive field measurement campaign was performed in July/August 2002 at the Global Atmospheric Watch station Izaña on Tenerife to study the interaction of mineral dust aerosol and tropospheric chemistry (MINATROC). A dense Saharan dust plume, with aerosol masses exceeding 500μg m−3, persisted for three days. During this dust event strongly reduced mixing ratios of ROx (HO2, CH3O2 and highe...
متن کاملCombined use of satellite and surface observations to infer the imaginary part of refractive index of Saharan dust
[1] We present a method for the retrieval of the imaginary part of refractive index of desert dust aerosol at near UV wavelengths. The method uses observations of radiances at 331 and 360 nm by the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer, and aerosol optical depth measurements by the Aerosol Robotic Network. The derived values of imaginary part of refractive index of Saharan dust aerosol at 360 nm are...
متن کاملOrganic Farming by Using Different Desert Soiles Could it be an Alternative to Fertilizers?
It is shown that Saharan soil has the potential of producing bioavailable iron when illuminated with visible light and also it contains some essential macronutrient and micronutrient elements. In this study, these properties of the desert soil were tested on the certified wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L. var. gonen 98) using Hewitt nutrient solution, illuminated and non-illuminated soil so...
متن کاملRadiative Forcing of Saharan Dust: GOCART Model Simulations Compared with ERBE Data
This study uses information on Saharan aerosol from a dust transport model to calculate radiative forcing values. The transport model is driven by assimilated meteorological fields from the Goddard Earth Observing System Data Assimilation System. The model produces global three-dimensional dust spatial information for four different mineral aerosol sizes. These dust fields are input to an offli...
